Hi students,
I, Er. Yash Kumar, welcome you to join this course on “Determine the size, design, and financial feasibility of the solar power system”
I have years of experience in solar PV technology and taught many students around the world.
This is the most comprehensive, updated, and effective course in the solar energy marketplace.
I know that solar energy is relatively a new field.
But I have designed this course to make it simple, relevant, practical, and comprehensive yet very effective.
Why Solar Energy?
Reason 1: The Rising Grid Electricity Prices
If we examine the trend, electricity prices are steadily increasing. Each year, we are spending more for the same amount of energy used.
This means you will be paying more every year than the previous one for the same unit consumed.
And the situation is similar in most of the countries around the world. Let me share you the residential grid electricity prices around the world.
Denmark is the costliest place to live in with a grid electricity rate of USD 0.53/kWh. Which is followed by Germany (USD 0.52/kWh) and the UK (USD 0.47/kWh).
Another factor that concerns the homeowners is the escalation in the grid price.
A high escalation per year can make the grid price rise more steeply.
- In India, the rate of escalation is 8% annually.
In the USA, the average annual growth is 3.14%
The average residential grid rate in the USA is 13.23 cents per unit. With an average escalation of 3.14%, the electricity price after 25 years would be 29 cents/unit.
Which is more than double the amount, anyone would be paying today for consuming the same unit in the 25th year.
The situation is similar in most of the countries around the world.
Reason 2: The Grid Energy is limited
Why?
Because we get electricity in our houses primarily by burning fossil fuels such as coal.
It will deplete sooner or later. The limited supply will make the electricity prices soar in the future.
Therefore, we need a source of energy that is reliable and available in large quantities.
“The escalation and uncertainty in prices have made people think of more reliable and affordable energy solutions.
Solar electricity fits in this category.
Reason 3: Our Electricity Demands are increasing
The global electricity demand is expected to accelerate in the next three years from 2.2% to an average of 3.4%.
This means we would be consuming more energy that before in the coming years.
Benefits of Solar PV
- Unlike grid electricity in which you pay money for using it; sunlight is free to all. You can harness solar PV technology and use it for running your electrical devices.
- Solar electricity is a clean source of energy. The making of electricity using solar panels is a clean process that does not pollute the environment.
“A 5 kW solar power system has the capacity to mitigate near to 7 tonnes of carbon emissions from the air
- It is a renewable source of energy. Unlike conventional fossil fuels which will deplete in a few hundred years. Our sun is going to provide energy for another 5 billion years. You can consume it as much as you want.
- Solar electricity makes you energy independent. As you are generating your electricity from sunlight (a free energy source); you become an energy independent.
- Solar PV technology is very much mobile. You can install solar power systems on any terrain. Even in remote places such as mountains it is difficult and expensive to provide grid electricity.
- Solar electricity is very smooth. It makes your electrical appliances run smoothly and improves their useful lives.
- Solar adds value and aesthetics to your home. The overall value of your home increases when you install the solar power system on its roof. Not only this, but the installed system looks aesthetically beautiful due to its sleek design, uniform color, and systematic arrangement of the solar panels on the roof.
- Solar offers an attractive return. Solar prices have slashed more than 80% in the last decade, making it a more attractive investment than ever before.
In addition, the state and the central governments of many countries are offering incentives and rebates to the users who made investments in solar.
“A 5-kW solar power system installed in a well-sunlit pays you back in 4 to 5 years
- Solar panels are very durable and require little maintenance. The average life of solar panels is 25 years. This means that your solar panels will produce power even after 25 years. Although there will be a degradation of power with time.
- When you are using solar for running electrical appliances. You are not using the grid electricity. This will reduce your utility bill and increase your solar savings.
- Net-metering is a bi-directional meter that allows the movement of electricity units between the grid and your solar power system. In case, your solar units remain unused. Then the net meter will allow those extra units to flow to the grid. And you get compensated for those units. Hence further reducing your utility bill.
Despite its benefits why we do not see many solar installations in our neighborhood?
Although, people understand that a cleaner energy option is the need of the hour. Despite its numerous benefits the adoption rate in society is not as expected.
It is because of the following main reasons:
- This technology is relatively new and people know less about it. They have apprehensions in their mind about sizing, cost, working, reliability, and durability over time.
- It requires a big investment although it offers faster payback. People do not know the return they would be getting after installing solar.
- The human tendency is to resist change and remain in the comfort zone until it becomes necessary at an individual level.

What is the price of the online solar course and how it is justified?
If you are a homeowner and want to install a 5 kW home solar power system on your rooftop.
Let us say the cost of a 5 kW system is $17,000 with installation (when everything from designing, purchase to installation is done by the solar installer).
1) After going through this course, you will be able to design a system matching your energy needs.
2) You will have complete control over the system design. You can purchase the equipment yourself and can negotiate the prices better (ask for multiple quotes and choose the best one) because you know the specification and sizes of each component.
3) In this process, you can save at least 10%-15% of the total cost of the system which is $1700 – $2500.
