The technology of Adani solar panels

Adani Solar is using the latest technologies in its solar panels such as Mon-PERC, Half-cut solar cell, Bi-facial, and MBB technology.

  • Encore Series: Multi-crystalline:
  • Eternal Series: Monocrystalline/P-type PERC Monofacial with MBB
  • Elan Series: P-type PERC Bi-facial with MBB

Let us look at each of these technologies:

PERC solar cell technology

When you paste an extra layer at the back of the solar cell, its efficiency increases.

And

Passivated Rear and Emitter Cell technology use this technique.

When this technology is implemented, it offers the following benefits:

  • Capturing more light
  • Reducing heat generation
  • Reducing electron-hole recombination

Multi Bus Bars

Busbars are thin strips of copper or aluminum.

They connect silicon cells and carry direct current, that solar cell makes from sunlight to the inverter.

The amount of current they carry depends on the size of the busbar.

They are flat strips of wire to increase the surface area that allow space for heat dissipation that is generated due to the current flowing in them.

MBB (Multi-bus bar) uses multiple copper or aluminum wires.

These multiple wires increase the current collection efficiency by reducing the current path between the cells.

MBB uses round wires instead of traditional flat wires, which increases the amount of incident light on the solar cell that boosts the power of the solar panel.

Also, it reduces the chances of micro-cracks in the cells and increases their durability.

Adani Solar uses 10 BB (10 bus bars) in its solar panels, boosting the power.

Half-cut solar cell technology

When the Half-cut solar cell technology is implemented, it offers the following benefits.

  • Reduces heat loss
  • Enhances cell strength,
  • Limits the shading losses in the panels.

Bi-facial solar cell technology

In this, the solar panels provide electricity from both their sides front and rear.

In this way, the bi-facial solar panels generate up to 30% more power than the traditional mono-facial solar panels.

You need fewer solar panels to produce the same amount of power as traditional solar panels.

Efficiency of Adani Solar Panels

Adani produces highly efficient solar panels with maximum efficiency of up to 21.19%.

  • Encore Multi-crystalline: 16.11% to 17.1%
  • Eternal PRIDE: 20.23% to 20.87%
  • Eternal SHINE: 20.22% to 21.19%
  • Elan PRIDE (Bi-facial): 20.23% to 20.27% up to 20% bi-facial gain leading to 25.36% efficiency
  • Elan SHINE (Bi-facial): 20.22% to 21.19% up to 25% bi-facial gain reaching 25.27%.

How well do Adani solar panels peform at high temperatures?

Heat affects the power output of the solar panels.

They produce less power when their cell temperature starts rising beyond 25°C.

The temperature coefficient of power tells the amount of power any solar panel is going to lose.

It is written in %/°C and its value is negative.

That indicates the loss in the power (%) with every degree rise in the temperature beyond 25 °C.

The Adani Solar panels have the following temperature coefficient of power:

  • Encore Multi-crystalline: -0.4%/°C
  • Eternal PRIDE: -0.34 %/°C
  • Eternal SHINE: -0.35 %/°C
  • Elan PRIDE (Bi-facial): -0.34 %/°C
  • Elan SHINE (Bi-facial): -0.35 %/°C

The power loss is calculated by using the following formula:

Power loss (%) = (Cell temperature – 25 °C) x Temperature coefficient of power

Assuming, cell temperature be 50 °C

The Adani solar panels will lose:

Power loss (%) = (50 °C – 25 °C) x -0.4 %/°C
(-0.4 %/°C is the temperature coefficient of power for Encore Multi-crystalline)
= 25 °C x -0.4 %/°C
= -10%

The Encore Multi-crystalline solar panels will lose 10% when their cells operate at 50 °C.

Doing similar math, the power loss under other series when cell temperature is 50 °C:

  • Eternal Pride: 8.5%
  • Eternal Shine: 8.75%
  • Elan Pride (Bi-facial): 8.5%
  • Elan Shine (Bi-facial): 8.75%

We can say that Adani Solar panels will lose anywhere between 8.5% to 10% when its solar cells are operating at 50 °C.

How strong are Adani solar panels?

The strength of the solar panel is defined by its ability to withstand snow weight and wind pressure.

It is defined by two ratings:

  • Snow load rating (Front load)
  • Wind load rating (Rear load)

The higher values are preferred.

The average of these values in the solar industry is 2400 Pa for both ratings.

The Adani solar panels have 5400 Pa as snow load rating and 2400 as wind load rating.

Adani solar panel warranty

Warranty is an assurance that a manufacturer gives to the buyer for its product.

Solar panel warranty comes in 2 ways:

  • Product warranty protects your solar panel against any material defect, premature wear, and tear.
  • Performance warranty assures that the solar panel will produce a certain percentage of power after 25 years.

Adani Solar offers 12 years product warranty and a performance warranty of 25 years.

{2.5% degradation the first year and -0.68% from 2nd to 25 years (Encore Multi-crystalline Series)
And
2% degradation in the first year and 0.55% from 2nd to 30 years (Eternal PRIDE, Eternal SHINE, Elan PRIDE, and Elan SHINE series)}.

Review of Adani solar panels

Adani solar panels price in India

Adani solar multi-crystalline solar panels are available in the market at Rs. 22/watt to Rs. 34 per watt.

(As power rating increases, the per-watt price decreases)

The Mono-PERC modules are available at Rs. 25/watt.

Units produced by 5 kW system in India

The units produced by the solar power system depends on many factors such as:

  • Sunlight
  • Cell temperature
  • Temperature coefficient of power
  • Panel degradation
  • Shading loss
  • Heating loss and other losses

When I consider these losses, the 5-kW solar power system with Adani solar panels in India produces 18 to 19 units per day.

Pros of Adani solar panels

  • Established Indian brand
  • It offers up to 30 years performance warranty on its Eternal, and Elan series solar panels.
  • They offer service in many areas because of good network in India
  • Adani solar panels perform well in places where live stock is kept because they are ammonia resistant. Therefore, they are Ideal to use in villages or places where we see animals.
  • Highly efficient solar panels with maximum efficiency of 21.19%.
  • Perform well in sand and dusty places.
  • Rightly priced
  • Fewer heat losses because of half-cut solar cell technology
  • More resistant to cracks

Cons of Adani solar panels

  • The temperature coefficient of power of its Encore Series is -0.4%/°C. I was expecting better
  • The wind load strength is 2400 Pa. Although, it is still one of the highest values in India. But we see many global players producing solar panels with wind load rating up to 4000 Pa.

Conclusion

Adani solar panels are durable and long-lasting. They are suitable for:

  • People want to meet their energy needs but have limited space. Choosing Adani’s highly efficient panels (Eternal Series), fewer panels can fulfil their energy needs.
  • People who want a quality product at a reasonable price
  • Farmers and people having live-stock such as dairy. Its ammonia-resistant panels can perform well in this situation.
  • Suitable for sandy and dusty places.
