Waaree 540W Solar Panel Review: Is It Worth Your Roof?
Are you considering installing a solar power system on your roof? Then Waaree solar panels could be a good option.
Waaree Energies is one of the oldest solar panel companies in India. Currently, it has a 12 GW production capacity, and it is also listed on the Stock Exchange.
Is investment in Waaree Solar Panels worth it?
In this blog post, we will review Waaree’s 540W solar panels based on their:
- Electrical Characteristics
- Mechanical Characteristics
- Thermal Characteristics
- Warranty
- Service
- Price
And compare these with industry standards.
Waaree’s Solar Panel Series: 520W – 550W
The 540W solar panel comes under Waaree’s WSMD Series.
In this series, we see solar panels from 520W to 550W.
W = Waaree
S = Solar Module
M = Mono-PERC solar cell technology
D = DCR Complaint (Domestic Content Requirement)
So, WSMD means Waaree Solar Mono DCR.

Why do Solar Companies make series like WSMD?
The small differences of 5W in the series are real and practical. These different solar panels are produced from the same production line.
This is because not all solar cells perform the same. Some may have higher output than others. And when these solar cells are assembled to form solar modules, they result in different final wattages.
It is like sorting mangoes by size; some are slightly bigger but still from the same tree.
An Analogy
Modern production lines are advanced and highly automated, but still, they can’t guarantee every panel is exactly 540W or 530W.
And due to this, we see multiple variants of the same production line.
Each step (usually 5 W) corresponds to a panel with slightly different performance — due to:
- Slightly higher efficiency
- Better binning (sorting of cells)
- Lower resistance or improved cell quality
Waaree 540W: STC vs NOCT
The nameplate rating of any solar panel is the power produced by it under STC (Standard Test Conditions). These are controlled conditions when:
- The sunlight intensity is 1000 W/m²
- Air Mass Index is 1.5
- Wind velocity ≈ 0
- Cell Temperature = 25⁰C
One can say that it is an ideal situation.
But these conditions rarely occur in real-life situations. Therefore, your solar panel produces different power (usually less) than the nameplate capacity.
Now, to simulate real-life situations, the solar manufacturers consider the realistic parameters that prevail in a practical environment, like:
Sunlight intensity of 800 W/m² instead of 1000 W/m²
Ambient temperature of 20⁰C and the cell operating temperature of ~45⁰C instead of 25⁰C.
And the air velocity of 1m/s.
When subjected to these parameters, the 540W Waaree solar panel produces 406.7W (75% of its nameplate capacity).
This is the case with all solar panels in the market.
Therefore, it is important to consider the NOCT values when evaluating solar panel performance in real-life situations.
This would also help you in realistically designing your solar power system.
For example, if your total load is 4 kW, then you need 5 kW solar panels to run the load (in practical conditions).

Electrical Characteristics
The electrical characteristics represent the ability of a solar panel to produce voltage, current, and power under specific environmental conditions like sunlight intensity and temperature.

Power (Pmax):
It is the maximum power that a solar panel can produce under STC. In the case of Waaree 540W, it is 540 Watts.
Open Circuit Voltage (Voc):
It is the voltage generated across the terminal of the solar panel when no load is connected. In this case, it is 49.61 volts. Voc is important for string sizing and inverter input limits. When we look in the table, we can say that it is better than the industry standards.
Voltage at Maximum Power:
We know that Power is the product of voltage and current. The Pmax would be the product of Vmax and Imax. The Vmax of the 540W Waaree solar panel is 41.75 volts. The value of Imax can be easily found by using the relationship (even though it is mentioned in the datasheet.
Pmax = Vmax * Imax
Or
Imax = Pmax/Vmax
= 540W/41.75V
= 12.93 Amperes
For a given power of 540W, as the voltage increases, the current has to go down so as to keep the product equal to 540W. The high value of Vmax and the lower value of Imax have many benefits for the solar panel.
- Lower heat losses, due to lower current value, while transferring energy.
Heat loss = I²R where I is the current and R is the resistance.
- Lower cable size needed, leading to cost savings
- Improved Efficiency in long strings: As the current is lower, you can add more solar panels in series, leading to simpler, cheaper, and efficient design.
- Useful in low-light conditions: Some high-Vmp panels maintain sufficient voltage to keep the inverter ON during early morning and late evening. This leads to longer daily operating hours.
Therefore, the high value of Vmax of Waaree 540W makes it an efficient solar panel.
Efficiency
It the amount of sunlight converted into DC power. It is represented as:
Efficiency (%) = {540W/(area of solar panel x 1000 W/m²)} x 100%
= {540W/(2.272 x 1.133) x1000} x100%
= {540/2.574 x 1000} x 100% = 20.98%
Area of Waaree 540W = 2.272 m x 1.133 m = 2.574 m²
(*You will see the size of Waaree 540W in the next table shown below)
Making it to 20.98% which is a good efficiency value.
So, the Waaree 540W solar panel is suitable for those who want solar electricity but have limited space.
Temperature Coefficient of Power
It is found that the solar panel’s performance gradually reduces with the increase in the cell temperature beyond 25⁰C.
How much a solar panel will lose depends on it temperature coefficient of power. The lower the value, the better it is.
The Temperature coefficient of Power of Waaree 540W is -0.34%/⁰C, which is better than the industry average of -0.35%/⁰C.
The minus sign indicates the loss of power.
This means that with the increase in every 1⁰C above 25⁰C, the solar panel will lose 0.34% of its Pmax (name plate capacity).
It uses the following formula to find the power loss:
Power loss (%) = (Cell temperature - 25⁰C) * Temperature Coefficient of Power
Consider the following example to understand it better:
Assuming cell temperature = 45⁰C
And the temperature coefficient of power = -0.34%/⁰C
Putting all these values in the given formula, we get:
Power loss (%) = (45⁰C – 25⁰C) * -0.34%/⁰C
= 20⁰C * -0.34%/⁰C
= -6.8% (minus sign indicates the power loss)
Now, a 500W Waaree solar panel with a temperature coefficient of power -0.34%/⁰C will lose 6.8% of its Pmax when its cell temperature is 45⁰C.
The 6.8% of 540W = 36.72 Watts
The 540W Waaree solar panel will produce 503.28W (540W – 36.72W) at 45⁰C.

Mechanical Characteristics of Waaree 540W
The mechanical characteristics of any solar panel are related to its dimensions, size, weight, strength, and material. How capable a solar panel is of withstanding the external environment.

Let us discuss these:
Dimensions and the Weight
The dimensions of Waaree 540W (2272 mm x 1133 mm x 35 mm) match the typical size that is required for the rooftop installation.
The weight of the 540W Waaree solar panel is 27.5 kg, which is on the lower side of the industry standard of 27 kg – 32 kg.
This means the Waaree 540W solar panel is lightweight and easier to install on the roof.
Cell Arrangement and the Technology
The 540W Waaree solar panel is are half-cut solar panel with Mono-PERC technology integrated into it.
The 72 solar cells of size 18.2 cm x 18.2 cm are cut into halves to make half-cells each of size 18.2 cm x 9.1 cm arranged in 12 columns X 6 rows ll 12 x 6 on the two halves of the solar panel. The half-cut solar cells offer many advantages over the conventional full-size cells:
- It increases the structural strength of the solar cell
- The heat losses are reduced
- Half-cut arrangement reduces the shading losses and hence the overall efficiency is improved
In addition, the Waaree 540W has Mono-PERC solar cell technology, making it more efficient than other conventional solar cells. Mono- is Monocrystalline and PERC- is Passivated Emitter Rear Contact.
This technology has many benefits over regular mono-crystalline solar panels like:
- A special reflective layer is added to the back side of the cell
- It reflects unabsorbed light into the cell for a second chance of conversion
- Improves low-light performance and overall efficiency (usually 1–1.5% more than regular mono).
All this combination makes it efficient with an efficiency of 20.98%.
Front Glass, Encapsulant and Frame
It’s 3.2mm low-iron tempered front glass, strong enough to withstand the harsh climatic conditions. The low iron content makes it more receptive to the light. Moreover, the ARC (anti-reflection coating) over it reduces glare/reflection → increases light absorption by ~2–3%.
The encapsulant is the glue-like substance that is pasted on the front and the back of the solar cell. The solar cell is sandwiched between the encapsulant, which provides good protection from PID losses and UV radiation degradation.
The Anodized Aluminium Alloy is light and rugged enough to withstand Indian climates.
Wind and Snow Load Rating
These two ratings indicate the solar panel’s ability to withstand wind pressure and snow weight, respectively. The higher the values, the stronger the solar panel is.
Waaree 540W has a wind load rating of 2400 Pascals (a unit of pressure), which means it can withstand the pressure exerted by wind moving at a velocity of 225 km/hr.
“This rating (wind load: 2400 Pa) makes the 540W Waaree solar panel suitable for Northern plains, Western and Southern interior lands.”
The snow load rating of 5400 Pa gives it a strength to withstand a snow weight of 550 kg/m², making it suitable for moderate and high snowy regions.
Junction Box and Connector
Its IP68-rated junction box makes it fully weather-proof, compliant, and reliable for the Indian weather conditions.
Also, IP68-rated connectors are universal and secure.
The Waaree 540W solar panel has a wire of cross-sectional area of 4 mm² and 500 mm in length are which is enough but slightly short if you need to place solar panels apart due to shading or uneven roof surface.
Thermal Characteristics of Waaree 540W
This shows the ability of the solar panel that how well it responds to the change in the temperature.

This table shows that Waaree 540W has better temperature coefficient of power than the industry average value. It will perform better than other solar panels with > -0.34%/⁰C with the temperature rise.
Also, its NOCT (nominal operating cell temperature) is lower (better) than the industry average, making it an ideal choice for hot climates and regions.
